How the market did
The Nasdaq Composite had the best day of the three big indexes, rising about 1.11%. That is the index that tracks a large mix of technology companies, so when tech bounces, the Nasdaq tends to lead the way.
The S&P 500, which tracks 500 of the largest companies listed in the US, gained about 0.42%. It is a broad measure of how the overall stock market is doing, so a positive day here generally means more stocks rose than fell.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which follows just 30 large and well established companies, slipped about 0.07%. That tiny dip is basically flat, and just shows that not every corner of the market moved in the same direction today.
What moved stocks today
The main story today was a rebound in AI and chip stocks. After a rough stretch, investors came back to companies linked to artificial intelligence, pushing the Nasdaq higher.
Tech earnings season is also just around the corner, and some investors appeared willing to buy back in ahead of those results. Earnings reports, which are the official updates companies give on how much money they made, tend to move stocks a lot when they land.
Not everything was calm. Some headlines flagged returning worries about trade and inflation, which may have kept the Dow and parts of the broader market in check. European markets also dropped on the same day, partly due to protests abroad, though that had a limited effect on US indexes.
