What is Stock ticker?

A ticker is a short nickname, usually 1 to 5 letters, that identifies a stock.

The simple explanation

Every public company has a unique ticker on its exchange. For example, Apple is AAPL and Microsoft is MSFT. You use the ticker to look up a stock or place an order.

An example

Searching AAPL brings up Apple's stock, not a random company.

Why it matters

Tickers are the quickest way to find the exact stock you mean.
