What is Analyst rating?

An analyst rating is an expert's opinion on whether a stock looks attractive.

The simple explanation

Analysts at banks and research firms study companies and publish ratings like buy, hold or sell, along with a price target. They can move stocks when they change, but they can also be wrong.

An example

An analyst upgrades a stock from hold to buy and the price rises a few percent.

Why it matters

Ratings explain many daily moves, but they are opinions, not facts.
