GlossaryWhat is EPS (earnings per share)?
EPS is how much profit a company made for each share of its stock.
The simple explanation
Earnings per share is net profit divided by the number of shares. Companies report it every quarter. Investors compare it with what analysts expected, and the gap often moves the stock.
An example
A company that earns 2 billion dollars with 1 billion shares has an EPS of 2 dollars.
Why it matters
EPS is the number most headlines mean when they say a company beat or missed expectations.
